Etymology
[From hæfer goat, blǽte (-a) a bleater. The snipe is associated in other languages with the goat. Cf. Ger. himmel-ziege : Fr. chevre-volante. The second part of the compound is kepe in hammer-bleat, v. D. D. , heather-bleat, v. N. E. D. , both names for the snipe.]
