The previous canon enjoins that ' ǽnig preóst ne stande on leásre gewitnesse '; in the present one the ' bísæce ordél' may be ordeals which, it was contended, had been conducted improperly (cf. Gif preóst ordál misfadige, gebéte ꝥ,- Ll. Th. ii. 296, 9),
